Public education is a resounding success!

Alan Schaeffer and Marshall Fritz (quoting John Taylor Gatto quoting H.L. Mencken), in Government Education Is Broken? It Just Ain’t So!

“[T]he aim of public education is not to fill the young of the species with knowledge and awaken their intelligence. . . . Nothing could be further from the truth. The aim . . . is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized citizenry, to put down dissent and originality. That is its aim in the United States . . . and that is its aim everywhere else.”

Another important idea, again from Gatto – “Children need to know that the ultimate form of private property is full possession of one’s own mind and volition.”

Every thing they write about (except the constitutional limits, a concept that is non-existent as far as the Indian constitution is concerned) is as much applicable in India as it is in the United States of America.

Read both articles – Schaeffer and Fritz (Government Education…), and Gatto (Against School).

I hope to meet some of you guys – the bloggers I follow, that is – one day, when I find it comfortable to drop my mask. Till then, no. In any case, I am not in Bangalore; actually, never been there.

One advantage of having a statcounter installed on your site is that you know the IPs, and hence the locations, of everyone who visits you :p

  • Aristotle The Geek  On December 4, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Yeah, IPs. It depends on how deeply the provider analyzes the data, though – my location generally shows up as either Bombay or Delhi on most tools. Then I could always block Sitemeter just like I block the irritating snap-whatever. Enough said.
