The legal and the ethical

“In law a man is guilty when he violates the rights of others. In ethics he is guilty if he only thinks of doing so.”

Jains believe that hurting by man, vachan and kaya( thoughts, words and physical abuse)all are equally bad.
    Nice quote.

The Jain position is a bit extreme when they extend it to include animals and other non-humans. Well, its their prerogative – peace is good; but pacifism can be dangerous.

The idea expressed by the quote is important in the field of jurisprudence – we have too many cases where laws have usurped the place of ethics and morality; you know I have already written about it – homosexuality, abortion rights, suicide and euthanasia etc etc. But governments are not going to understand this anytime soon, are they.
