Anurag Kashyap and Dev D
I saw the Anurag Kashyap interview on Zoom the other day. Most of the time, he was talking about things that are known to those who read his blog. Kabir Bedi was the one doing the interviewing and he kept talking about ‘controversial’ director Anurag Kashyap, as if controversies are his only claim to fame (agreed, it is one of them).
One of the most interesting moments of the interview came when Bedi asked Kashyap about the remake of Devdas that he is working on. I am not making a remake of any previous film, but my movie – Dev D – is a modern day retelling of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s story, K said. In fact, Devdas is a vahiyaat (nonsense) story and not one of Chattopadhyay’s best works, he continued. On hearing the word vahiyaat, Bedi went acchha? (really?). Nice reaction there.
K believes that we Indians love to wallow in misery too much and celebrate self pity (have to agree with that). So, in Dev D, Devdas will no longer be celebrated, and Paaro and Chandramukhi, the two strong-willed women, will be the be the ones who will walk away with the appreciation, while poor Dev D will bite dust, as always. But this time round, no one will even care (in the movie that is).

DevD Chattopdhyay’s best??!!!…recently i read in Mumbai Mirror that AK has called it his worst

I can’t comment on it; I have neither read his works nor seen any of the earlier Devdas-es, except for a few scenes here and there. Its a matter of opinion, and AK has his own.
